Local guitarist, Daniel Martinez introduces a new recorded collection of instrumental hymns performed in his signature flamenco style at a free event at Sheldon Museum of Art on Saturday, April 19. Martinez and Oscar Rios will perform material from the recording beginning at 3:00 pm in the museum auditorium.
Flamenco Hymns is Martinez’ first full-length studio album since the release of his Christmas CD in 2008. The 12 tracks showcase original arrangements on a variety of hymn tunes spanning three centuries. Listeners will enjoy his treatment of favorites ranging from “Amazing Grace” to “Be Thou My Vision” to less familiar pieces like “Huye Cual Ave a su Monte” as well as his crowd-pleasing rendition of the Negro Spiritual “I Want Jesus to Walk With Me.”
Says Martinez in the liner notes, “For many centuries, talented and inspired composers have given us the privilege of joining together to sing and play “psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.” Many lyrics for the old hymns from the Christian tradition have been translated into countless languages and dialects. They have been played and sung with different rhythms and instruments across time and cultures, but they retain the same melodies that bring us comfort and joy through familiarity. With this recording, I bring familiar hymn tunes alive through an instrumental musical expression that touches me deeply. Allow me and my flamenco guitar to transport you to a unique musical space where you can experience favorite melodies with new energy and color.”
Martinez is a native if Iquitos, Peru who first moved to Lincoln in 2002 as a student at Union College. Now on staff at Union as a guitar instructor, Martinez teaches, performs solo, and with the bands Jarana and Kusi Taki. Find more information online at www.danielmartinezmusic.com.
